Description

The American Jewish Archives have created separate files concerning LGBT topics. The "Homosexuality Nearprint Special Topics Box" dates from 1969 to the present and measures .3 linear feet. It contains materials from inside and outside of the LGBT Jewish community, including items from the International Conference of Gay and Lesbian Jews. Subject files of LGBT congregations such as Beth Chayim Chadashim (Los Angeles), Congregation Ahavat Shalom (San Francisco), and others have been created. Two single folder biography files exist for Allen Bennett and Julie Spitzer, the first gay and lesbian rabbis (respectively). These files contain their ordination theses and other writings. In Small Collections, the papers of Eugene Mihaly, professor at the Hebrew Union College, contain his "Responsum on Homosexuality," concerning gay and lesbian congregations (dated before 1975).
