An Intergenerational Conversation with Troy Perry and Matthias Roberts

On Wednesday November 3, 2021, in honor of the decades of courageous work of The Rev. Elder Troy Perry, LGBTQ-RAN hosted an intergenerational conversation between Rev. Perry and Matthias Roberts. This dialogue remembered the journey, struggles and progress we've made in queer religious history, and looked at the road ahead.

The Rev. Elder Dr. Troy D. Perry founded Metropolitan Community Churches with 12 people in his living room in Los Angeles on October 6, 1968.  Since that time, the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches (UFMCC) has grown, under his leadership, to 44,000+ people in over 300 congregations in 16 countries around the world.

Matthias Roberts is a psychotherapist, author of Beyond Shame: Creating a Healthy Sex Life on Your Own Terms (Fortress/Broadleaf, 2020), and host of Queerology: A Podcast on Belief and Being.  He holds two master’s degrees, one in Theology & Culture and one in Counseling Psychology from The Seattle School of Theology and Psychology.  Matthias writes and speaks nationwide about the intersections between gender, sexuality, mental health, and theology.

This event is part of our Queering Our Roots campaign this fall, celebrating LGBTQ-RAN's 20th anniversary.   This campaign will honor five elders of LGBTQ+ religious movements in the U.S. as well as highlight the rich history that LGBTQ-RAN has gathered over these years.
